The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Ablution is half the faith (1); (saying) 'praise is to God' fills the scale; 'exalted is God' and 'praise is to God' fill what is in-between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is light, charity is a proof (of faith), and patience is enlightenment. The Qurʼān is an argument, either for or against you (2). All people start their day as vendors of their souls, either freeing the soul or bringing about its ruin (3)." Footnotes: Some scholars are of the opinion that in the context of this ḥadīth prayer is the intended meaning of the word faith. Also the Arabic term (shatr) translated as one-half is also used in Arabic to mean part of a whole, i.e. that ablution is part of faith and not literally half of it. If you recite the Qurʼān and abide by its regulations it will argue in your favor on the Day of Judgment; but if you recite it and fail to abide by it, it will only argue against you for having known the right path and not taken it. People who have chosen to follow the guidance of their Lord are free from following Satan and their earthly desires while those who follow their desires and the devils are slaves thereof and lead themselves to their doom.
